Case Study #2
This project involved structural pruning of a mature Sunburst honey locust on a residential Ancaster property. The tree's wide spreading canopy was crowding nearby shrubs and smaller plantings while limiting sunlight to the surrounding landscape. The pruning needed to improve clearance and balance without compromising the honey locust's natural form or triggering weak regrowth. The work was completed at the Standard tier with selective canopy elevation, balanced limb reduction, and full site cleanup.
Tree Pruning — Standard
Ancaster, ON
2024
The property featured a mature Sunburst honey locust as a landscape feature. Over time, the lower canopy had extended outward and downward, crowding surrounding shrubs and smaller trees while blocking light to the planting area below. The owner wanted the tree maintained, not reduced or topped. The goal was clearance and balance, not size reduction.
Our approach was to evaluate the canopy as a whole before making any cuts. Honey locust trees have a wide, spreading growth habit, and aggressive pruning can trigger weak regrowth and structural issues. Selective limb removal and elevation were used to improve clearance while respecting the tree's natural form.
Honey locust trees develop wide, spreading canopies that respond poorly to aggressive pruning. The work needed to improve clearance and structure without triggering weak regrowth or compromising the tree's long-term form.
We approached the work selectively, removing only what was necessary to achieve clearance and balance. Each cut was placed with respect for the tree's natural shape. No topping, no aggressive reduction. The canopy was elevated and refined, not reshaped.
A cleaner, safer, better-balanced canopy with proper clearance over the surrounding landscape. The honey locust kept its natural form. The surrounding planting area gained both sunlight and breathing room. The work was completed at the Standard tier with the result delivering immediate visual improvement and long-term structural benefit.
